Vernie "Faye" Black Obituary

Mrs. Vernie "Faye" Black of Tampa passed away Thursday, January 9, 2020. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, January 18th,  at 2:00 p.m. at Abundant Life Worship Center, 8117 N. 13th St., Tampa, FL 33604 with Dr. Karen Barnes, Eulogist.  Interment will follow in Orange Hill Cemetery.

Vernie “Faye” was a native of Perry, Georgia born  to Jasper and Susie B. Postell. She later relocated to Tampa, FL where she graduated from Franklin Adult High School in Hillsborough County.

She was married to the love of her life, the late Deacon Alfred Black, Jr., from April 24, 1976 until his death in 2014. To their union were born two offspring, Steven and Yolanda. Faye enjoyed caring for her home and family, and she did so with great skill and pride. Her passion for children was in fact her motivation for working in the Head Start Program, nurturing and training little ones from various walks of life.  Her grandchildren have also been blessed to experience her guidance and affection firsthand through the years.

While fiercely loyal to family, Vernie’s impact extended to friends, co-workers, and church members alike. Faye was among the most faithful and was a founding member of the Abundant Life Church, where served tirelessly as a Prayer Warrior, President of Hospitality, Sunday School Superintendent, and Food Planner, to name a few of her roles.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; and two brothers, James “Dude” Sutton and Jack Postell.   Left to cherish her memory are: her children, Yolanda “Yvette” Black and Steven B. Black; stepson, Reginald L. Black; sister, Nellie Chaney; grandchildren, Joshua, Shondrick, Steven Jr., Tyteanna, and Kevin Black, Jeffrey and Jeremy Carlyle; a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren, and other family members and friends.

The visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, January 17, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue.
