Ms. Alveda Sharlene Vernon “aka Pumkin” passed away on Tuesday March 17, 2020. Due to the current restrictions from the CDC the funeral service will be closed to the public. A Private Family Service will be held on Saturday April 4, at Mt. Pleasant M. B. Church, 2002 N. Rome Ave., with Reverend Dr. C. T. Kirkland, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.
Alveda was a native and lifelong resident of Tampa, Florida. She was educated in the public schools of Hillsborough County was a graduate of Howard W. Blake, Class of 1969. She furthered her education and earned a AS degree from St. Petersburg College; Certification from International Academy of Design & Fashion; and BA degree in Sociology from Bethune Cookman College. Alveda was employed as a Medical Records Clerk at Tampa General Hospital for many years.
She was as a faithful member of the Mt. Pleasant M. B. Church. She also served as Secretary for the South Florida Progressive Congress #6.
Alveda was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Bertha Mae Vernon; and siblings, Derwin Bernard Vernon, and Darlene Valerie Vernon-Reed.
She leaves to cherish her memories: brothers, Curtis Vernon (Jessie), Len Vernon, and Charlie Vernon Jr.; sister, Mamie Cordelia Vernon-Igles (Rudene); nephews, Damien Boatwright Sr., Len Vernon Jr., Derwin Vernon, Len S. Vernon Jamal Fisher, Michael Vernon (Unique), Maurice Vernon (Alayna), Mario Vernon, Theardrick Holmes, Loren Vernon, Marcel Vernon, and Rudene Igles Jr.; nieces, Erika Carter, Charlotte Vernon (Gary), Lanishia Vernon, Princess Vernon, Kalen Vernon, Nikesh Vernon, and Temesha Vernon; and a host of other sorrowing great nieces, nephews, and cousins, sorrowing friends, Joyce Johnson, beloved classmates, Curtis Wright, Arthenia Brown and others of HWB 1969; special friend/therapist, Deena Dekoker and Dave and Sue Dekoker, Pastor C.T. Kirkland & the Mt. Pleasant MB Church Family, Cammie Dennis, Sam Mehring, and Adrian Webb.
The visitation will be held Friday, April 3 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606. Visitation hours have been extended and we are asking family and friends to pay their respects and to follow the CDC guidelines.
