Deacon Marvin L. Porter Jr. of Tampa, Florida, passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 2504 Chipco Street, Tampa, FL 33605, with Reverend Bartholomew Banks, Officiating. Interment will follow at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513.
Deacon Marvin Porter Jr. was a native of Danville, Georgia and was born to the late Marvin Porter Sr. and Gladys Knight Porter. He was a resident of Tampa for over 45 years. He graduated from Calhoun High School in Irwinton, Georgia. Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served 21 years, retiring with an Honorable Discharge. He also worked as a Letter Carrier for the United States Postal Service.
Deacon Porter was a very faithful and active member of St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, where he served many years on the Usher Board, the Brotherhood Auxiliary and the Deacon Board. He was also a graduate of the Faith Bible Institute and a member of the National Service Organization - Tampa. Deacon Porter had a genuine love for people and was a true disciple of Christ.
Deacon Porter was preceded in death by: his parents and daughter, Ciana Porter.
He leaves to cherish fond memories of him: a very loving and devoted wife, Elder Ella Fields Porter; daughters, Judge Shana Rooks Malone (Robin) of Georgia, Angela Hobley, and Lutrena McNair; sons, Alvin McNair Jr. of Texas and Alonzo Fritz McNair; sisters, Dorothy Covin (Earnest) of Georgia, Sarah Norris and Hattie Mae Tharpe (Everette) of Ohio, Laura Peck (Timothy) of Georgia; brother, Calvin Porter (Mara) of Washington; sister-in-law, Jacquelyn E. Green; in house great granddaughter, Alana S. Kemp and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606.
