Derrick Gerard Sampson passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022. Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, 5:00 p.m. at Mount Moriah Primitive Baptist Church, 1225 N. Nebraska Ave Tampa FL 33602, with Dr. B.R. Fulton, Officiating. MASK RECOMMENDED.
Mr. Sampson was affectionately called “BIRD” by his family, was born on May 20, 1971, to Douglas L. and Ruthie D. Sampson in Tampa, Florida. He was baptized at an early age and was a former member of Greater Mount Moriah P.B. church. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, he joined the United States Navy and was honorably discharged. Derrick was employed as a US Postal mail carrier in Pinellas County Florida.
Derrick was the best father, husband, son, brother, family member, friend, co-worker, and Naval Service member that he could be. He put others first by making sure their needs were met and everyone was happy. He always told his children how proud he was of them. He never let a day pass without telling his loving wife that he loved her. Derrick will never be forgotten. He will always be loved.
He was preceded in death by: his brother, Douglas R. Sampson; grandparents, Leroy and Mae Bell Sampson, and Charlie and Simmie Durr; father-in-law, Gerald Schampers; mother-in-law, Bonnie Schampers; his dog, Asia; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and other family members.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a devoted wife, Melissa Sampson; 2 precious daughters, Jasmynn and Alexandra, Douglas L. and Ruthie Sampson; best friend/sister, Misty Sampson; brother-n-law, Matthew (Kim) Schampers; sister-n-law, Angela (Eric) Baldwin; nephews, Demarcus (Brittany) Cleveland, Devonte Sampson, Elijah Schampers, Owen Schampers, Lucas Baldwin, and Nevyn DeMille; 2 nieces, Robyn (Ricky) Scott and Ovia (Aubrey) Sampson; uncle, Ishmel Sampson; 6 aunts, Jacquelyn (Clemon) Youngblood, Patricia Dawson, Annie L. Dozier, Hattie P. McAllister, Yvonne (William) Pride and Bettie Durr; cousin like a sister, Crystel Sampson; son-in-law, Johnny Banks; god-brothers, Jermaine Giddens, Jernard Giddens, and Rodney (Kayla) Dozier; his dog, Gracie; 2 great nephews, 1 great niece, and a host of cousin, friends, co-workers and other relatives.
