Dr. Janis Lena Crosskey of Tampa, FL transitioned from her earthly home on Sunday, March 23, 2025. A Homegoing Celebration will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025, 2:00 p.m. at College Hill Church of God in Christ, 6414 N. 30th Street, Tampa, Florida with Pastor Designee Elder Donald Jorden Sr., Officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33610.
Dr. Janis Lena Crosskey was born on July 18,1965 in Miami, FL to Johnny Crosskey, Jr. and Mabel Crosskey. Janis was a passionate mother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She was also a woman of both style and taste. Janis went to Roland Park for elementary school and Pierce Junior High for middle school. She graduated from Thomas R. Jefferson High School in Tampa, FL, then the University of South Florida where she received a bachelor’s in chemistry. Janis then went to Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she received her Doctorate in Optometry. Janis was an optometrist supporting the eye health of countless individuals in Jacksonville, Melbourne, Lakeland, and her hometown, Tampa. She was also a successful entrepreneur. As the owner of USA Eyecare, she not only encouraged eye health, but she did her part to elevate an economically disadvantaged community in Jacksonville. For that work, Janis was the 2002 winner of the Women of Color Cultural Foundation’s Economic Development Award.
She was preceded in death by: her father, Johnny Crosskey, Jr.
She is survived by: her daughter, Damamli Dorsey; son, Desmond Dorsey; mother, Mabel Crosskey; sister, Karen Crosskey; brother, Johnny Crosskey III; niece, Harper Crosskey; sister-in- law, Sheriss Crosskey; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.
We are thankful for her inspiration and the precious memories of Dr. Janis Crosskey. She made a mighty impact and will be truly missed.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606.
