Henry Powell Clanton of Tampa passed away Monday, January 13, 2020. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 25 at 2:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Memorial Chapel, 301 N. Howard Avenue with Minister Imam Rasheed Basheer, Officiating. Interment will follow in Orange Hill Cemetery.
Henry Powell Clanton was a native of Forest, Mississippi born to Charles and Grace Clanton-Wills. He was educated in the public schools of Mississippi and furthered his education at ITT Technical Institute where he earned his Associate’s Degree.
Henry was employed by RCA prior to becoming an Entrepreneur of Salaam’s Sweet Shop and Black Like Me Boutique. He was also skilled in Masonry and Carpentry. Henry joined the Nation of Islam and was a member of the FOI (Fruit of Islam). He also served as a Civil Rights Activist and Community Organizer and was a member of the Indiana Black Expo.
He was preceded in death by: his parents, Charles and Grace Clanton-Wills; twin brothers, Howard and Edward Clanton; stepfather, Sammie Wills; son, Ali Clanton; and grandson, Wali Clanton Jr.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories: his wife, Cora Clanton; loving children, Fatima Clanton, Wali Clanton Sr., Sana Clanton, (Stepchildren), Natalie Panko (Dasril), Anita Robinson, Resa Chapman, and Vougina Hughes; (two children from his previous marriage with Lucy Clanton), Gwendoyln Fay Clanton-Johnson (Thomas) and Lawrence Clanton (Shelia); he also had other children, Hank Clanton, Diane Clanton, and a set of twins; grandchildren, Evernecia Taylor, Everquicia Taylor, Everlecia Taylor, Everett Taylor III, Everkesia Taylor, Ever Taylor, Everett Taylor Jr., Ali Amir Clanton, Alia Clanton, Alaya Jordan, Saniya Malphus, Aesha Bailey (Robert), Deshawn Brown, Derraka Murray (Demario), Aja Bradfield (Quinton), Indya Kemp (Lewis), Willie Champan, Lamar Chapman, Wesley Hamilton, Antonio Powell Jr., Yakima Hughes, Taurus Gadsgen Jr., Bryce Harris, Barrington Hodges, and Korea Clanton; special niece, Hannah Ames; and special grandson, Jose Uruena; Henry’s Siblings, Robert Clanton, Sammie Curtis Wills, Lawrence Wills (Luella) and Grace Wills-Graham; nieces and nephews, Edward Clanton, Jeannie Clanton, Eric Clanton, Perpetural Clanton, Keith Clanton, Robin Wills, Catherine Grace Wills, Lawrence Edward Wills, Wesley Graham, Sr. (Cherline) and Wynton Graham Sr. (Victoria); and a host of other relatives and friends from Indianapolis, Indiana, Forest, Mississippi, Atlanta, Georgia, Shirley, New York, West Babylon, New York and Wilmington, North Carolina.
The remains will repose after 5 p.m. Friday, January 24 at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue.
