Mother Evelyn Smalley Cooper, a cherished matriarch and faithful servant of the Lord, peacefully transitioned to her eternal reward on Thursday, June 26, 2025. Born on February 28, 1934, to Dave and Josephine Smalley, she lived a life marked by devotion, compassion, and unwavering faith.
She was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon Eugene Cooper, and together they shared 50 years of love and partnership. Their union was blessed with three children—two sons who have preceded her in death, and one devoted daughter.
Mother Cooper’s spiritual journey began early. At the age of eight, she was baptized at First Missionary Baptist Church. A transformative encounter with a godly neighbor led her to a deeper walk with Christ. Inspired by scriptures like Hebrews 12:14 and 2 Corinthians 5:17, she experienced a powerful conversion and was filled with the Holy Spirit at eighteen. From that moment, she dedicated her life to ministry at Seffner Church of God in Christ—now Emmanuel Cathedral COGIC—under the leadership of Pastor Jesse H. Smalley.
Her commitment extended far beyond the church walls. She faithfully served in local civic organizations throughout Mango, Seffner, and Thonotosassa; led as PTA president at Jennings (McDonald) School; worked over 20 years with Hillsborough County Transportation; and lovingly opened her home to foster 35 children. She also ministered weekly to the seniors of Sterling Heights, bringing them encouragement and prayer.
A true woman of grace, strength, and humility, Mother Cooper’s life was a living testimony of service and sacrifice. When asked about her many accomplishments, her answer remained consistent and clear: “God is the source and strength of my life. I give Him all the glory, honor, and praise.”
She leaves to cherish her memory: a loving daughter, Jeanette Reed and her half sibling, Varna Sherrod; 1 daughter-in-law, Gail Cooper; 1 sister, Mary Miller; 1 sister-in-law, Edna Mae Johnson; 2 brothers-in-law, Carlton Cooper (Shirley), Eddie Lee Cooper (Annie Pearl); 3 grandsons, Anthony Hendry (Albrina), Rodney Reed (Alberta), Micah Cooper; 1 granddaughter, Jasmine Cooper; 2 granddaughter-in-laws, Lisa Cooper, Micah Reed; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins; special loved one close as a sister, Mother Rosemary Gadsden; Emmanuel Church of Seffner and First Community Church Families; Ecclesiastical Seven District; Southwestern Florida Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ; and many other sorrowing relatives and friends.
