Mother Myrtis Thurman Obituary

Mother Myrtis Jones Thurman, 94, of Tampa Florida, transitioned to her new life on Thursday, February 8, 2024.  Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, 2:00 pm at Brown Memorial Church of God in Christ, 2313 E. 27th Avenue, Tampa, Florida, to celebrate a life well lived, Bishop Anthony Gilyard, Pastor/Eulogist. Interment will follow in Orange Hill Cemetery, 4900 E. Chelsea Street, Tampa, FL 33610. 

Mother Myrtis Jones Thurman was born November 7, 1929, in Leland, MS to the late Rev. Albert and Mother Annie Jones. She and her family moved to Tampa in 1955. Mo. Thurman joined (then) Brown Temple COGIC, under the leadership of Supt. John B. Brown, and served in the church faithfully, until her health failed. Mother Thurman worked for Maas Brothers, as a Private Housekeep/Caregiver, Holiday Inn, and the School District of Hillsborough County. 

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Eddie Thurman Sr.; parents, Rev. Albert and Mo. Annie Jones; and brothers, David, Frank, and Mack Jones. 

Mother Thurman, will forever be cherished by: her children, Elder Eddie, Lenora (Elder Alan), Michael, Michelle, and Elijah Sr. (Glory); grandchildren, Danielle (Adrian), Gabrielle, Rickey Jr., Mondyodka (Chris), Elijiah Jr., Imani (Andrew), Michael II, Antonio, Joshua, and Aaliyah; great grandchildren, Christyan, Alexander, Rickey III, Mila, Nevaeh, Amara, Canyen, Gabriel, and Damien; Bonus children, Carolyn, Tabitha, Westley, Lydia, and families; siblings, Mother Catherine Stevens, Sister Willie Nealy, Mother Sadie Johnson (Albert), Major Jones Sr., and Deaconess Annie Ray ( Rev. Charles); the Bynum family of Chicago, IL, devoted family friend Rev. Frank Gray, The Brown Memorial Church Mothers Board, Missionary Board and Church Family, Progress Village neighbors, Mo. Joyce Whitehurst, Ms. Colleen Lee, Ms. Lolita Johnson, Mo. Lonnie Young, the Green Family, the Rodgers Family, the Johnson Family, the Pittman Family, and Chatman Family; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and numerous endearing and devoted  friends. 

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024, 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Brown Memorial Church of God in Christ, 2313 E 27th Ave, Tampa, FL33605.
