Mr. Alfred Nelson Obituary

Mr. Alfred Lloyd Nelson, 92, of Tampa, Florida, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2026.  Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Allen Temple AME Church, 2101 N. Lowe Street, Tampa, FL 33605, with Reverend Dr. Glenn B. Dames, Jr., Officiating.  Interment will follow at a later date in Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513.

Alfred, born on October 14, 1933, in Ocala, Florida, was the son of the late Peter Moore and the late Thelma Nelson. His maternal grandmother lovingly raised him, the late Mrs. Mary Henry Leightner-Nelson, whose guidance helped shape the man he would become.

Alfred graduated with honors from Howard Academy High School in 1951. He then went on to Florida A&M University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business Organization and Management in 1956, followed by a Master of Science degree in Education.

Shortly after graduating, Alfred was drafted into the United States Army in 1956. He proudly served with the 2nd Armored Division, famously known as “Hell on Wheels.”  His service included one year stationed in Germany and another year stateside.  After his active duty, he fulfilled an additional six-year service obligation and remained actively connected to the Army for another ten years, demonstrating his enduring commitment to his country.

In 1959, Alfred began a lifelong career in education with the Hillsborough County School District. Throughout his career, he served as a teacher at several schools, including Middleton High School, Blake High School, and Plant High School, where he later became Dean of Boys. After dedicating 15 years to education, he briefly worked as a Life Insurance Agent before resuming his commitment to education as a Program Specialist with the Florida Department of Education from 1977 until his retirement in 2003.

Even in retirement, his heart for service remained strong, as he faithfully contributed more than a decade to the “Seniors in Service of Tampa Bay” program, continuing to uplift and support his community and the next generation of students.

In 1974, Alfred married the love of his life, Janice Nunn Nelson, and together they built a strong and loving family.

Alfred was a faithful member of Allen Temple AME Church in Tampa, where he served in the male chorus and as a Steward for many years. Alfred lived a life rooted in faith, service, and community. He was known as a gentle giant—a man of wisdom, kindness, and quiet strength—who poured knowledge and encouragement into everyone he encountered.

Alfred enjoyed keeping up with world news, was a devoted fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and cherished spending time at his favorite local spot, Martha’s. Above all, he loved his family deeply and took great pride in each of them.

He is survived by: his loving wife, Janice Nunn Nelson; his children, Sandra Niles (Ron), Alan Nelson (Tiffany), Adrian Nelson (Leynoree), and Janiece Nelson; and his cherished grandchildren, Jalen Niles, Isaiah Nelson, Micah Nelson, Aria Nelson, and Princeton Nelson.

Alfred’s life was one of purpose, service, and love. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
