Alton M. Jones, beloved father, brother, uncle, teammate, and friend of Tampa, Florida, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Memorial Chapel, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606 with Rev. Leon Gallon, Officiating.
He was born in Tampa, Florida, to Mable Underwood Jones and Ulysses Jones. Raised in West Tampa by his devoted grandmother, Alton grew up surrounded by family and formed an unbreakable bond with his brothers, Vincent and Rodney. The three brothers were inseparable from childhood through adulthood, sharing countless memories, adventures, and achievements.
Alton attended Plant High School, where his athletic talents began to shine. He later attended the University of Florida alongside his brothers, proudly wearing the Orange and Blue as a defensive tackle for the Florida Gators. His years on the football field taught him discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. These qualities remained with him throughout his life. The friendships he formed during those years became lifelong bonds, and his teammates remained an important part of his extended family.
Though life took him down many paths, including two marriages, Alton remained grounded in the values instilled in him by his grandmother: loyalty to family, strength in adversity, humility, and perseverance. Above all else, he cherished his children and the lifelong bond he shared with his brothers.
Alton will be remembered for his quiet strength, his love of family, his dedication to those he cared about, and the pride he carried for his West Tampa roots and Gator heritage. His presence will be deeply missed, but the memories he leaves behind will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
Alton was preceded in death by: his parents, Mable Underwood Jones and Ulysses Jones; the grandmother who lovingly raised him; his grandparents, Lucille and Marshall Jones and Daisy and Henry Underwood; his sister, Renee Jones; and his stepbrothers, Alfonso, Roosevelt, and LeRoy.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion through his children, Shane Jones and Jqualin Jones, who were the greatest joy and pride of his life. He is also survived by: his brothers, Vincent Jones and Rodney (Lisa) Jones; his stepsister, Sharon Henry; nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members; as well as the many friends, classmates, and teammates whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Forever a Gator. Forever a brother. Forever loved.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606.
