On Thursday, August 1, 2024, Dolphus “Leon” Johnson received the call from our heavenly Father ending his earthly life. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, 2606 W. Grace Street, Tampa, FL 33607 with Minister William Cade, Officiating. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories, 4207 E. Lake Avenue, Tampa, FL 33610.
Dolphus “Leon” Johnson was born in Nansemond (Suffolk), Virginia, he was the son of James King Johnson and Ruth Whittier Johnson and the brother of eleven (11) siblings, one of which was his twin. Acquiring his formative education in the public school system of Virginia, he graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1964. Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, an enlistment that included an assignment at MacDill Air Force Base. While stationed there, he met his wife, Betty Joyce McNair and they became the parents of two sons. Following his service in the Air Force, He made Tampa his home and furthered his education by training to become a plumber. Using this training, he was a Maintenance Worker at the University of South Florida until his retirement.
“Leon” was preceded in death by: his wife, Betty Joyce McNair; son, Dolphus Johnson Jr.; parents, James King Johnson and Ruth Whittier Johnson; and siblings, Equilla James, John Henry Johnson, George Johnson, Charles Johnson, May Johnson, and Roosevelt Johnson.
He leaves to cherish memories: his son, Timothy Johnson and wife Shayla; grandchildren, Delany, Devin, Brent, Harley, Brittany, Timothy Jr., Brittani, and Antrissia; great-grandson, Josiah; siblings, William Johnson (Raeford, N.C.), Annie Ruth Scott (LaPlata, Maryland), Dorothy Vaughn (Brooklyn, N. Y.), and JoAnn Lee (Washington D.C.); The McNair Family; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, numerous other family members, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606.
