Mr. George Alvin Davis, Sr. of Tampa, FL passed away on Saturday, October 18, 2025. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 2504 Chipco Street, Tampa, FL 33605, Reverend Dr. Bartholomew Banks, Pastor, Reverend Eric Gallman, Officiating. Interment will follow on Monday, November 3, 2025, 12:30 p.m. at Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513.
Mr. George A. Davis, Sr., a resident of Tampa for over 80 years, was born to Maggie Copeland Davis on May 12, 1935 in Panama City, Florida. He was educated in the Hillsborough County School system and graduated from Don Thompson Vocational School. He then served in the United States Army for two years, stationed in Butzbach, Germany. After his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from Florida A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education.
In his professional life, he was employed as a teacher at Dunbar Elementary School. He then transitioned to working for the City of Tampa as the Director of Community Relations and retired as the Supervisor of Women’s Minority Business Association for the City of Tampa. During this time, he also built and owned the Eastside Professional Center in the heart of Tampa’s black community. He was also a dedicated member of Agape Christian Church where he faithfully served as a Deacon under the leadership of Reverend Eric Gallman.
Throughout his years of community service, he held various leadership positions, including president of the Mental Health Board, the Florida A&M University Tampa Alumni Association and the Hillsborough County Girl Scouts of America. He was also a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for over 49 years, the Urban League and was a lifetime member of the NAACP.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his lovely wife of 55 years, Jacqueline M. Davis; his daughters, Deborah Davis and Tikija Davis Picott (Jerry); son, George A. Davis, Jr.; grandchildren, Jerry L. Picott, III (Kayla), Jasmine Picott, and Jordan Picott; great-grandchildren, Wynter Picott and Jerry L. Picott, IV; a special sister-in-law, Izella McCree; his nurse, Lisa Hollingsworth and a hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends. A special thanks goes to Gulfside Hospice for all their care and support.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. John Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 2504 Chipco Street, Tampa, FL 33605.
