Mr. Major Mention, Sr. Obituary

Mr. Major M. Mention, Sr., affectionately known as “Bump Bump”, of Tampa, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.  Homegoing Service will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Memorial Chapel, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606 with Pastor Donald Lott, Officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery, 4615 E. Hanna Avenue, Tampa, FL 33610.

Major was born on February 3, 1940, to the late Morosa and Janie Mention. The centerpiece of his life was his Legendary 60+ year romance with his beloved wife, Willie Mae. They met when she was just 18, and from that moment forward, they were inseparable. Their marriage was a true testament to commitment—weathering life’s challenges and growing stronger with each passing decade. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, laughter, and an unbreakable bond.

He was a devoted husband and a proud father to their two children, Major and Telecia, instilling in them the values of hard work and the importance of family. For his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, he was a wellspring of wisdom, humor, and unforgettable

stories.

Major graduated from Hillsborough High School and later pursued a career in landscaping—a craft he genuinely loved. Known as “a man of many talents,” he spent his retirement years sharing his gifts and spreading joy. He enjoyed playing cards, watching football, going to the dog track, and spending time with those he loved.

He was preceded in death by: his father, Morosa Mention; mother, Janie Mention; brother, Walter Mention; sister, Rosa Lee Hermitt; daughter, Telecia Mention; and grandparents,

Oscar and Roberta Mention and McKinley and Annie Mae Moore.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Willie Mae Mention; son, Major Mention Jr. (and wife, Betty); sister-in-law, Sandra Richardson; grandchildren, Tarshemia Martin (and Darryl), Eric Chapman Jr. (and wife, Ja’Nisha), and Brandon Mention; great grandchildren, Jaquez Martin Sr. (and Tazia), Ja’Marion Strange, Jalecia Strange, Janelle Strange, Eric Chapman III, and Ezekiel Chapman; great-great grandchild, Jaquez Martin Jr.; and a host of grieving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
