Mrs. Florence Owens Obituary

Florence Penalver Owens of Tampa, FL passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024, 2:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Progress Village, 8722 Progress Blvd, Tampa, FL 33619 with Pastor Todd Hammond, Officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery, 4615 E. Hanna Avenue, Tampa, FL 33610.

Florence Penalver Owens was the daughter of the late Domingo Penalver and the late Ethel Borders Gilmore.  She was born September 1,1926 and reared in Tampa, Florida.  Florence attended Lomax Elementary School, Booker T. Washington Jr. High School, and graduated from Middleton Senior High School.

In June of 1943, she was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Elmer Leroy Owens, Sr.  To this union were born seven children:  Elmer Leroy, Jr, Cynthia, Jacqueline Delores, Linda Joyce, Sheila Maria, Gail Loretta, and Wayne Anthony Owens.  Florence and Elmer, who was lovingly known as "Bud," were happily married for forty-six years at his demise September 23, 1988.

In May of 1949, Florence joined Greater St. John Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J. G. Washington, where she sang in the No.1 Choir.  When transportation became a hindrance to her ability to attend church services, she transferred her membership to First Baptist Church of College Hill under the leadership of the Reverend J. C. Robinson.  There, she also sang in the No. 1 Choir for many years.  However, when an opportunity arose that they might better their living conditions for themselves and their family, Florence and Bud relocated their family to Progress Village.  She kept her membership at First Baptist Church of College Hill, until once again, transportation to and from the church became very challenging.  Florence and Bud decided to move her church membership to First Baptist Church of Progress Village, under the leadership of the Reverend B. T. Williams.  She again joined and sang in the No.1 Choir for many years prior to her being stricken with a stroke in 1996, which left her unable to sing.  Florence was employed by the Hillsborough County School System from which she retired after twenty-four years of service.  Florence also served as a member of the Hi-Noon Prayer Band, Princetonette Club, and the Widows on the Go auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Elmer L. Owens, Sr.; sons, Elmer Owens, Jr. and Wayne Owens; brothers, John, Harold, and Raymond; sisters, Theresa and Edna Kirk; sister-in-Law, Sharon Hill; brother-in-Law, Charles Hill; cousins, Dorothy Duncan, Samuel Barnett, and Loretha Williams; Goddaughter, Nora Gilbert; and stepsister, Esperanza Cassellas.
