Mrs. Mattie Phillips Johnson Obituary

Mrs. Mattie Phillips Johnson of Tampa, FL passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, 2606 W. Grace Street, Tampa, FL 33607, with Interim Pastor Minister William Cade, Officiating. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Park, 4615 E. Hanna Avenue, Tampa, FL 33610.

Mrs. Mattie Phillips Johnson was born June 18, 1963, in Lakeland, Florida to the late Henry Phillips, Sr. and the late Letha Governor Phillips. Mattie graduated from Plant City High School in 1981, where one of her greatest accomplishments was being the first African American Drum Major of the Plant City High School Marching Band. She received her bachelor’s degree in early childhood education from Nova Southeastern University in 1988.

Mattie was a Hillsborough County Public School educator for 25 years until her retirement in 2013. Through her life, career, and legacy, she will remain in the hearts and minds of many. Her church affiliations included First Born Church of the Living God in Plant City, FL, and Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church in Tampa, FL. She also attended By Faith Ministries in Plant City; FL. Mattie was also a member of the National Educators Association.

Mattie was preceded in death by: her loving husband, Michael L. Johnson, Sr; her son, Devon Kiel Phillips; her parents, Henry and Letha Phillips; her three brothers, David Dunson, Sr., George Phillips, Sr. and Henry I. Phillips; and her sister, Katie P. Traylor.

She leaves to cherish a life of memories: a devoted daughter, Makayla L. Johnson of Tampa, FL; one sister, Quentine (Roland) Hinton of Tampa, FL; one brother, John D. Phillips of Plant City, FL; four sisters-in-law, Rosemary Phillips of Nashville, TN, Barbara (James) Bethune of Grand Prairie, TX, Jacqueline Johnson of Tampa, FL, Patricia (Michael) Murphy of Cartersville, GA, and Arnita Johnson of Lutz, FL; two brothers-in-law, Augustus Traylor of Stockbridge, GA, and Jack (Maria) Johnson of Spokane, WA; Godson, Yohan Bell Newsome; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.

A Visitation will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at By Faith Ministries, 514 South Warnell Street, Plant City, FL 33563.
