Mrs. Rosetta Gowins Barnes was born in Williston, Florida, and resided in Tampa, Florida. She attended Hillsborough County Public Schools and graduated from Middleton High School, Class of 1960. She later met and married Adolphus Barnes and they had three children. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Progress Village, where she dutifully served in the Choir, Usher Board, and the Clothes and More Ministry. She was also a dedicated and active member of her high school class meetings and functions, as well as the Progress Village Senior Center.
From an early age, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior and dedicated her life to serving Him. Her relationship with God was not simply something she spoke about; it was the way she lived every day. She walked in kindness, prayed with conviction, and carried herself with grace, wisdom, and strength.
Rosetta was also deeply involved in her community. Rosetta was a long-time resident of Progress Village, spanning over six decades. She was very active at the Senior Center. She loved and adored every member and for her, they were family. She believed in lifting others and leaving every place better than she found it. Her warmth, laughter, wisdom, and unwavering compassion touched countless lives.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Adolphus Barnes; her grandparents, Willie and Georgia Lane Sims; her father, Clarence Gowins; her mother, Ethel Sims Gowins; her daughter, Athelia O. Barnes; and her siblings, Louvenia Gowins, William Gowins, Leroy Gowins, and Horace Gowins.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Adolphus R. Barnes (Sonya) and Anna M. Johnson (Barnes); her sisters, Ethel Scott and Lula Vine Monroe Coleman; her grandchildren, Adolphus A. Barnes, Lyric Barnes, Jasmine Barnes, Adonis Barnes, Olivia Ifill, Ava Johnson, Oscar Johnson IV, and Anaya Geter; and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Progress Village, 8722 Progress Blvd. Tampa, FL 33619.
