Ms. Gwendolyn Wheeler of Tampa, FL passed away on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024, 11:00 a.m. at Exciting Faith Alive Church, 5705 E. 32nd Avenue, Tampa, FL 33619 with Overseer Dr. Antonio Hawkins, Officiating. Interment will follow in Orange Hill Cemetery, 4900 E. Chelsea Street, Tampa, FL 33610.
Ms. Gwendolyn Wheeler was a native of Tampa, FL, for 56 years. She attended Hillsborough County Public Schools graduating from Middleton High School in 1967. She then furthered her education at Brewster Technical for Secretarial Science graduating in 1968, continuing education at Manpower Bus School obtaining her certification in 1969. With her love for education, she continued her studies receiving her AA in Liberal Arts from HCC in 1975. Also attending the University of Tampa and the University of South Florida majoring in Psychology and Sociology.
Gwendolyn was a proud Middleton Tiger Alumni and attended class events and reunions. With her educational background, she obtained employment with the City of Tampa employment and training department and the sanitation department as an intake counselor and clerk typist. Gwen as affectionally known obtained a position at USF counseling center.
Gwendolyn married Frederick Wheeler in 1976 and to this union, their son Joseph D. Wheeler was born. They moved to San Fransico, California in 1980. It was then that she found her church home Mt. Vernon M. B. Church where she was a faithful and devoted member attending mission meetings, BTU, and Bible Studies.
Gwendolyn gained employment with Delta Dental as an Executive Secretary. She was loved and cherished by her colleagues. After retiring she returned to Tampa, FL. With her passion and love for helping others, she gained employment and also volunteered at the Center for Women, The Family Support and Resource Center, and Dress for Success.
Gwendolyn was preceded in death by: her grandson, Eric V. Cleveland Jr.; parents, Lillian Williams, and Settle Carroll Jr. (Edna Carroll); aunt, Mildred Clark; nephew, Richard Wills; cousins, Milton and Micheal Stubbins, and Vivian Stubbins- Robert; and ex-husband, Frederick Wheeler.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted and loving son, Joseph D. Wheeler ( Shivonetta); grandsons, Joseph Wheeler II, Benjamin Williams, and Dontae Williams; granddaughters, Denethia Steadman and Destiny Williams; siblings, Christine Franklin (Frederick), Anthony Carroll Sr. (Tena), and Robin C. Sampson; loving niece, Robin Wills; nephews, Anthony Carroll Jr., Na’il Carroll, Harrington Sampson, James Marion Jr. (Tahara), and Andrew Akinpelu; devoted cousin, like daughter, Rhonda Walter (Rick); dedicated friends, Martha Upshaw, Delores Betha, Emma Crawley, Emma Betha, and Barbara Gumz-Howard; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL 33606.
