Ms. Mary Juanita Hawthorne, born May 1, 1938, in Salisbury, North Carolina, earned her wings and went to be with our heavenly father on January 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was the cherished daughter of Robert A. and Georgiana Anderson (née Taggart), and her life was marked by resilience, devotion, and quiet strength.
Mary dedicated more than 30 years of service to Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where she worked with steadfast commitment and compassion. Her work touched countless lives, and she carried herself with the grace and determination that defined her character.
Above all, she poured her heart into her family, nurturing them with unwavering love and guidance. Mary was a devoted mother to her six beloved children: Valerie J., Gregory L., Michelle D., Cassandra D., Antoinette M. Hawthorne, and Patricia L. Jackson. She was also a proud and doting grandmother to Natasha F. Hawthorne and Gregory T. Baxter II, and a loving great-grandmother to London G. Letthand, who brought her immense joy.
Mary’s kindness extended far beyond her immediate family. She was a treasured aunt, cousin, and friend to many, known for her warmth, generosity, and the gentle spirit she carried into every room.
Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, the family she adored, and the love she gave so freely. May her memory be a blessing and a source of strength to all who knew and loved her. Though Mary has departed this earthly life, the love she shared, the wisdom she offered, and the kindness she embodied will endure in the hearts of her family and friends. Her spirit remains a guiding light, reminding us of the beauty of a life lived with warmth, purpose, and enduring love.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Heart Association in Mary’s honor. Services will be private.
