Samuel Walter Anthony Sr. of Tampa passed away on Sunday, July 4, 2021 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Beulah Baptist Institutional Church, 1006 W. Cypress Street, Tampa with Reverend Dr. Reginald R. Edwards, Sr., Senior Pastor of Greater Mount Pleasant MB Church, Callahan, Florida, officiating. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park, Tampa.
Mr. Anthony was born in Apalachicola, and attended the schools of Franklin County, Florida. Mr. Anthony was a member of the United States Army, World War II, where he was honorably discharged. He later resided in Tallahassee, Florida where he worked for Greyhound Bus Services for several years. In the mid 40’s he married Gladys Lee of Tallahassee. They were married for 10 years and they had two children, Samuel Walter Anthony, Jr. and Brenda Joyce Anthony. Mr. Anthony and his family moved to Tampa, Florida where he has resided now for 69 years. In 1956, Mr. Anthony was remarried to Juanita Griffin and they had two children, Carlos Anthony and Chloe Anthony.
Mr. Anthony was a member of New Salem MB Church, Tampa where he served as an Usher and Trustee Board member. Later, he joined Beulah Baptist Institutional Church, Tampa where he served as a member of the Usher Board. Mr. Anthony became a Longshoreman with the Tampa International Longshoreman Association which he loved very much. He was also the President of the Longshoreman Fellowship Hour for 21 years. He and his wife Juanita were honored at the Longshoreman Fellowship Hour Appreciation Program and Dinner in 2017 for their work with this organization.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mathew Anthony and Lila Nicholson Anthony; his brothers, Elysses Jones, Robert Jones, Edward Jones, Isaiah Anthony, Ruben Anthony, James Wallace Anthony and Louis C. Anthony; sister, Lilly Ruth Anthony-Jackson; and his son, Samuel W. Anthony Jr.
Mr. Anthony leaves to cherish his memories: A loving, caring and devoted wife of 65 years Juanita Letitia Anthony; children, Dr. Bakhitah Brenda Abdul-Ra’uf of Christiansburg, Virginia, Carlos L. Anthony (Sadiqa) of Long Beach, California and Chloe D. (Anthony) Oglesby (David) of Bethlehem, Georgia; loving grandchildren, Nwoye Bowens (Tameka), Samuel Anthony III, Qaddafi Sabree, Aqueelah Sabir (Emanuel), Christopher Anthony (Malinda), Kiana Anthony, Katya Anthony and Katie Oglesby and Khandi Oglesby; great-grandchildren, Brooke, Aalim, Haola, Chinua and Kayode, and a host of great nephews, nieces, loving cousins and friends.
The remains will repose from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 16 at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue.
