Sister Janice Slate Powell

Sister Janice Slate Powell of Wimauma, FL passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2025, 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Progress Village, 8722 Progress Blvd Tampa, FL 33619, Pastor Todd E. Hammond, Pastor. Interment will follow in Wimauma Community Cemetery, 6012 Edina Street, Wimauma, FL 33598.

Janice Slate Powell was born on November 4, 1953, in Parrish, Florida to Sister Temelia Bellamy and Brother Willie Slate. She was educated in the Hillsborough County School System. She attended Brooklyn Technical College and graduated with a degree in Business. She worked as a Hillsborough County Deputy Sheriff for over 20 years, and she continued her career as a Deputy Bailiff in the 13th Judicial District of Hillsborough County until she retired. She confessed Christ at an early age and was a loved and prominent member of the First Baptist Church of Progress Village.

She was preceded in death by: her sons, Mark and Lamar Pate.

Sister Powell leaves to cherish and honor her: her husband, Jake Powell Jr. of Tampa, Florida; her loving and caring daughter, Erica K. Green; her granddaughter, Marquasha Pate; two loving and caring grandsons, LaMark Williams and Marquise George; brothers and sisters, Gary Slate, Linda Gano, Clifford Bellamy, Cynthia Ann, Benita, Jackie, Margaret, and Gwendolyn Slate of Ohio; loving and devoted nieces and nephews, Bridgette Ray, Shantia Ray, Brandon Ray, Chris Ray, Tierra Ray, Shala Slate, Gary Slate Jr., and Paige Slate; her favorite cousin, Pamela Maples; loving and caring friends, Georgia Davis, The Balkmans, Ada, and Rickie Kendall; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Progress Village, 8722 Progress Blvd, Tampa, FL 33619 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
