Victorine Cowins Obituary

Victorine Ogletree Cowins affectionately known as “Vic” passed away Saturday, August 29, 2020.  Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 8 at 12 Noon, at Ray Williams Memorial Chapel, 301 N. Howard Avenue, Tampa, FL with Dr. Reginald D. Carter, Sr., officiating.  Please follow the CDC guidelines.  Masks are required

Victorine Ogletree Cowins was a native of Detroit, Michigan. She was the oldest of nine children born to Roosevelt and Olga Ogletree. Her parents and brother, William Lester, preceded her in death.

Vic accepted Christ at an early age at St. Peter A.M.E. Zion Church in Hamtramck, MI. She attended the Hamtramck Public Schools System and graduated from Hamtramck Public High School.  Vic was employed at Alcoa an aluminum factory for several years.

She was united in marriage to the love of her life, Nolden Cowins, in a beautiful wedding ceremony at St. Peter’s. Victorine and Nolden were business minded and owned and operated a dry cleaner on Detroit’s west side. Two daughters were born from that union, Cheryl Delphine and Cynthia Maria.

Vic was a devoted wife and mother who tremendously enjoyed her family. Her husband, Nolden, preceded her in death.  After moving to Detroit from Hamtramck, Vic joined the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where she was an active member. The family later moved to Southfield MI; however, she still maintained her membership at Dexter Ave.  She enjoyed being a part of the senior group and maintained communication with membership throughout the years.  Later in life, she and her eldest daughter moved to Riverview FL, where she enjoyed the milder climate.

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, Cheryl and Cynthia (Reginald); siblings, Roselyn Bills, Hazel O. Cowan, James Ogletree (Edith), Marian Sims, Richard Ogletree (Linda), Gerald Ogletree (Greta) and Fay Flowers (Willie); step-grandchildren, Cherrelle, Reggie Jr. and Jordan (a college student) and 4 (plus one on the way) great grandchildren who lovingly referred to her as “Grandma Vic” along with many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends.

The remains will repose from 11 a.m. until service time Tuesday, September 8, at Ray Williams Funeral Home, 301 N. Howard Avenue. We are asking family and friends to follow the CDC guidelines. Masks are required.
