William Darnell Cook - “DJ Colonel Funk”

William D. Cook also known as DJ Colonel Funk was born November 29, 1947 to the late Thomas Shirley Cook and Virla Mae Cook in Tams, West Virginia. He was the 1st born of 10 children.  The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio in 1952, where he graduated from East Technical High School. He was a lover of music and art and he was well known for his musical band where he was the lead singer while in high school and became a Disc Jockey at the age of 17 years old.

William was introduced to Brenda Cooke through a mutual friend and not too long after dating they married. They had one child and named her Marcella "Marcie" Cook. Through his daughter he became a grandfather of two. A grandson named, Demetrius and a granddaughter named, Shai’De.

He also was a great grandfather of 4 grandchildren; 2 grandsons, Marquis and Myles; and 1 granddaughter, De’Lilah;  One grandson, Kai J. Sales, preceded him in death.

If you knew him, you know that he was a genuine soul. He was a lover of God and He loved family and he enjoyed attending family gatherings. He always had a joke or some sort of comical way about him. He tried to never forget gifts to give to his loved ones. He had a lot of admirers and good friends. He was so laid-back and over all just an awesome spirit, he surely could put a smile on the face of anyone who came into his presence. He was also an artist. He could draw anything straight from his head. He was a photographer and disc jockey for many family weddings and events around Cleveland. He had many jobs that he worked throughout his life but the one everyone would remember him by is The One and Only DJ Colonel Funk. “We Want The Funk, Gotta Have The Funk.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Larry Cook; his sister, Anita Cook and his ex-wife, Brenda Cook.

He is survived by: his daughter; grandchildren; great grandchildren; his siblings, Shirley, Rodger, Diane and Donna, Vanessa, David and Avery; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and his 2nd wife, Linda Cook and family. He will forever be in our hearts and we will miss him tremendously. Our hearts and minds are filled with memories that will live on with us for a lifetime.
