Witt Sidney Green Obituary

Senior Deacon Witt Sidney Green of Tampa passed away Tuesday, October 6, 2020.  A Graveside service was held Friday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Witt Sidney Green was a native of Tampa, Florida born to Mr. Sidney and Mignon Green. Sidney was educated at Fessenden Academy: a private academy established in 1868 for African American students. Sidney continued with his studies at Dillard University, New Orleans. He is a graduate of the class of 1952.

Prior to entering Dillard, Mr. Green had a colorful career in the Armed Forces.  Both Army and Air Force. After his honorable discharge from the military he entered Temple University, Philadelphia and graduated with a Master’s degree in Mathematics. Sidney was a lifetime Member of the Tampa Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, Incorporated.

Brother Green was baptized at an early age and was a loyal and faithful member to his family's church Greater Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He was a Senior Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Male Chorus member, Sanctuary Choir member and the church Treasure for more than 20 years.

Mr. Green was employed in several industries, but teaching was his passion. He began teaching while living in Philadelphia and continued to teach over the years: sometimes a teacher, substitute teacher and in his later years a Sunday School teacher.  Mr. Green was a Tampa treasure and legend for many. He was active in his community, always making himself available to those in need, and continued to drive other senior citizens to their appointments and grocery shopping even at ninety years of age.

Witt, (known to most as Sidney), was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, family-man, friend and a servant to The Lord. He was well loved and admire by those around him for his graciousness and serving spirit.

He was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Bernice Green.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his brother, Joesph Green of Oakland, CA; his daughter, Julee Green of Atlanta, GA; his stepdaughter, Sandra Niles; his stepson-in-law, Ron Niles both of Tampa: his granddaughter, Ashley Cleveland of Atlanta; his step grandson, Jaylan Niles of Tampa; his great-granddaughters, Zhaeniya Green and Penelope Nehemiah both of Atlanta; and a host of other relatives, church family and friends.  He was well loved and admired by those around him for his graciousness and serving spirit.
